Rotatable x-ray structures (Jmol)

These x-ray structures are the first obtained for [Rh(CO)₂I₂]^-, the active complex in the rhodium/iodide-catalysed carbonylation of methanol (Monsanto process).

[Rh(CO)₂I₂]^- N-methyl pyridinium salt.

Note how the square planar anion stacks approximately parallel to the M-methyl pyridinium cation

Stacking pattern

[Rh(CO)₂I₂]^- N-methyl-4-ethyl pyridinium salt. Here the ethyl substituent on the cation disrupts the parallel stacking
